静かに楽しむ～大人の冬～北空知のユニークな体験で特別な北海道旅行をしよう／A Trip to Sorachi’s Tranquil North

北海道庁国際課に勤務している、イギリス出身の国際交流員（CIR）、ジョシュアです。交流員になる前は、空知管内の岩見沢市に住んでいたこともあり、空知総合振興局主催のFAMトリップに参加できると聞いたときは、とてもワクワクしました。今回は、これまであまり足を運ぶ機会のなかった北空知エリアを訪れる貴重な機会となりました。
この記事では、沼田町の真っ白な雪、秩父別町の緑のパスタ、妹背牛町のカーリング、そして深川市のシードルの魅力についてご紹介します。ぜひ最後までお付き合いください。

自分たちだけの銀世界へ ー 沼田町
札幌駅から深川駅へ向かう列車の中で、車窓から見えるのは一面の雪景色。真っ白な平野の先には、木々が点在し、白と黒のコントラストが美しい山々が広がっています。しかし、深川駅が近づくにつれて、次第に風が強まり、降り積もったばかりの雪が巻き上げられ、空から降る雪と混ざり合って視界を白く覆っていきました。
その景色を眺めながら、少し不安がよぎります。
朝から楽しみにしていた最初のアクティビティ……この天候で、本当にできるのだろうか？
深川駅には予定より少し遅れて到着し、そこから最初の目的地である「そらち自然学校」へバスで向かいました。沼田町の山あいへと進むにつれ、天候は次第に落ち着いていきましたが、景色の白さは変わりません。道路自体はしっかり除雪されているものの、両脇には背の高さほどの雪の壁。まるでゴーカートのコースを走っているような感覚です。
「そらち自然学校」に到着すると、さっそく最初の体験「スノーシュー」が始まりました。実はこれ、私にとっては初挑戦。出発前の数日間、雪の上を妖精のようにふわりと歩く自分の姿を何度も想像していましたが……現実はそう甘くありません。どんなに性能の良いスノーシューでも、体が軽くなるわけではないのです。
ガイドの井上さんの後を追いながら歩くと、足元の雪がぎゅっと圧縮され、しっかりとした道ができていくのが分かります。進むにつれて、左右には再び雪が盛り上がり、ここに来るまでの道を思い出しました。
もしスノーシューを履いていなかったら……どれだけ深く沈んでいたのか、想像するだけでぞっとします。たぶん、二度と自力では出られなかったでしょう。
思い描いていたほど優雅には歩けませんでしたが、景色はまるで別の世界に来たようです。新雪に覆われた幌新（ほろしん）の森に、この日最初に足を踏み入れたのは私たちでした。誰にも邪魔されない、自分たちだけの冬の王国。静寂の中で、心ゆくまで雪と遊びました。
遠くへ雪玉を投げて跡を残したり、木の枝に雪を当てて仲間に降らせたり。
そして私は……思い切って雪の中へダイブ！ ふかふかのベッドに身を沈め、枕に包まれるような感覚でした。
その景色を眺めながら、少し不安がよぎります。

井上さんは、雪の重みで木の形が変わることや、白樺の樹皮がキャンプの火起こしに役立つことなど、森の中でしか学べない話をたくさん教えてくれました。

短い滞在時間ながら、ここで過ごした時間は強く印象に残っています。何より記憶に残るのは「色」。真っ白な雪に覆われていても、この町は緑と赤にあふれていました。
昼食は「キッチンハウス小島」へ。アットホームな雰囲気の中、地元食材を使ったさまざまな料理が楽しめます。
今回はおすすめに従い、ブロッコリーパスタメニューから「カルボナーラ」と名物の**「緑のナポリタン」**を注文しました。
「緑のナポリタン」は、秩父別町特産のブロッコリーを粉末にしたパウダーが練り込まれた緑色の麺が特徴のご当地グルメ。

なぜ、秩父別町はこんなに「緑」なのか？
小島さんによると、秩父別町は、約35年前に稲作からブロッコリーの栽培にも力を入れるようになったとのこと。
そして2013年、町のブロッコリーを広くPRするために誕生したのが「緑のナポリタン」。
実は、料理が完成する前に名前だけが先に決まっていたそうです。
そこから約2年、町内のシェフたちが試行錯誤を重ね、現在の形にたどり着きました。
そのエピソードを聞いて、完成度の高さに納得。
鮮やかなトマトソースの赤と、麺の緑のコントラストは美しく、味も見た目も楽しめる一皿です。秩父別町のブロッコリーは評判どおり。

氷上を滑るカーリング体験 ― 妹背牛町
次に向かったのは、「妹背牛町カーリングホール」です。
今回体験したのは、初心者でも2時間でミニゲームまで楽しめるカーリングレッスン。
参加者のほとんどが未経験、しかも氷の上に慣れていない超初心者だったため、
レッスンしてくれる橋向先生にとっては、なかなか手間のかかるクラスだったはずです。
しかし、先生の指導はとても丁寧で、リンクを歩いて氷に慣れる練習、次にカーリングストーンを滑らせる練習と、ひとつずつ確認しながら進行。振り返ってみると、立つのもおぼつかなかった私たちが、マークを狙ってストーンを投げられるようになるまで、驚くほど早い成長でした。
自分の上達が目に見えることで、全員がどんどん夢中に。
技術と精度を高めようと集中しているうちに、時間はあっという間に過ぎていきます。

FAMトリップ最後の訪問先は、「アップルランド山の駅おとえ」。
ここでは、**深川産りんご100％**を使ったアルコールシードル「ふかがわシードル」が製造されています。
施設内を案内していただき、製造工程を見学(工場見学は、事前に施設へ相談することで可能です。)。
まず驚いたのは、製造室に入った瞬間に広がる、濃厚なりんごの香り。原料の新鮮さが一瞬で伝わってきます。
りんごを搾る機械、果汁を貯蔵する大型タンク、発酵槽、そして完成したシードルをボトルに詰める工程まで。
瓶詰め後は、一本一本を光にかざし、人の目で丁寧にチェック。果肉や不純物がないことを確認してから出荷されます。
どのボトルも、間違いなくおいしい「ふかがわシードル」です。
「ふかがわシードル」は様々な場所で買えますが、ここを訪れる最大の価値はーー自分だけのシードルのボトルを作れること。

実際に暮らした経験がある私は幸運ですが、旅人として訪れても、たった1日で空知の魅力の一端を感じることができるはずです。
札幌、小樽、函館、旭川ほどの知名度はないかもしれません。
それでも北空知には、ここにしかない静かな魅力があります。
楽しい体験、美しい景色、そしておいしい食べ物。札幌や旭川から日帰りでアクセスでき、人混みを離れてゆったりと過ごしたい方には、これ以上ないおすすめの場所です。

Having lived in Sorachi’s Iwamizawa before, I was thrilled to have the chance to join the FAM Trip hosted by the Sorachi General Subprefectural Bureau and visit a part of the subprefecture I’m not very familiar with.

A Snowy World All Your Own
As the train carried us north from Sapporo towards Fukagawa, I gazed out onto the snow-covered fields of Sorachi that rolled up into the black and white of the tree-dotted mountains. As we drew closer to our destination the wind picked up, lifting freshly fallen snow up from the ground and mixing it with even more falling from the sky. Watching the view fade out into a white haze, I grew worried. I’d been so excited for the morning’s activity, but would it really be possible in weather like this?
We arrived in Fukagawa a little later than expected and boarded a bus to the Sorachi Nature School, our first destination of the day. As we made our way further and further out towards the mountains of Numata, the weather began to ease. The whiteness of the scene, though, didn’t. While the roads themselves had been cleared to allow us to travel, the sides were piled with several feet of snow. It felt more like driving on a go-kart track than real roads.
We soon pulled up to the Sorachi Nature School and immediately began our first activity, something I’d never done before and was incredibly excited to try – snow shoeing! In the days building up to the trip I had dreamed of walking on top of the snow like some sort of fairy, gliding across the surface. I should have realized that, no matter how good the snow shoes are, they don’t make you weightless. As I followed in the path of our guide, Ms. Inoue, I could feel the snow below my feet compressing, packing itself into something solid enough to walk on. The snow rose up on either side of me again, the path we were carving reminding me of the snow-wall surrounded roads we took on our way here. I could only imagine how far I’d sink if I wasn’t wearing them – I don’t think I’d ever get out!
While my own movements weren’t as magical as I’d imagined, the scenery was. We were the first to trek out into Horoshin forest on this freshly fallen snow. It felt like a winter wonderland just for us, and the isolation really made it possible to enjoy ourselves to our heart’s content. We threw snowballs into the distance to leave our mark on the landscape and into branches to drop snow onto one other. I even dove into the snow, and its embrace felt like sinking into a soft bed and being covered with pillows.
We arrived in Fukagawa a little later than expected and boarded a bus to the Sorachi Nature School, our first destination of the day. As we made our way further and further out towards the mountains of Numata, the weather began to ease. The whiteness of the scene, though, didn’t. While the roads themselves had been cleared to allow us to travel, the sides were piled with several feet of snow. It felt more like driving on a go-kart track than real roads.
We soon pulled up to the Sorachi Nature School and immediately began our first activity, something I’d never done before and was incredibly excited to try – snow shoeing! In the days building up to the trip I had dreamed of walking on top of the snow like some sort of fairy, gliding across the surface. I should have realized that, no matter how good the snow shoes are, they don’t make you weightless. As I followed in the path of our guide, Ms. Inoue, I could feel the snow below my feet compressing, packing itself into something solid enough to walk on. The snow rose up on either side of me again, the path we were carving reminding me of the snow-wall surrounded roads we took on our way here. I could only imagine how far I’d sink if I wasn’t wearing them – I don’t think I’d ever get out!

Our guide showed us how the weight of the snow warped the shape of the trees and told us about how useful the bark of the shirakaba tree (a white birch) is for starting fires when camping. We saw a line carved into the snow where an animal had crossed, the piled snow obscuring whether it was a deer or a fox. We even had the privilege of seeing a river that can only be reached in the winter with snow shoes, as the route we’d taken is covered over by bushes and brambles that make it inaccessible unless coated by snow. It really felt like we were in a world all our own.

A Taste of Green and Red
Thoroughly tired out from our snow-shoeing experience, we headed to Chippubetsu for lunch. We didn’t spend long there, but it was a memorable experience, The most vivid part of those memories is the color – even buried in white snow, the town is one of green and red.
We had our lunch at Kitchen House Kojima, a cozy little restaurant that serves a variety of dishes. We took the recommendations of our hosts and ordered the carbonara and the Midori-no-Napolitan pasta, or green napolitana pasta, from the broccoli pasta menu. The word midori in Japanese means green, and the town is famous for its midori-no food products that use a powder made from locally grown broccoli, the town’s specialty. From green noodles to green ice cream, this broccoli powder gives Chippubetsu’s cuisine a clear and unique identity that you can’t take your eyes off!

I was enticed by such a suspicious sounding mixture and had to give it a try. I was surprised by how pleasant it was - the sweet and milky taste of the ice cream gradually gave way to a fresh and healthy aftertaste. I’ll definitely order it again the next time I’m in Chippubetsu.
So why does Chippubetsu have so much green?
Mr. Kojima told us that 35 years ago Chippubetsu expanded from rice farming and also began growing broccoli . In 2013 the town decided to promote the broccoli through the Midori-no-Napolitan dish. If you’re considering a day trip to Chippubetsu, I’d also recommend stopping at the Chippubetsu Centennial Memorial Tower. When Chippubetsu was being developed the Toden Bell was rung to indicate the time to the tondenhei inhabitants. Its role has now been taken over by the Western Bell, installed in the Chippubetsu Centennial Memorial Tower. The bell is rung three times a day for the town’s inhabitants today, a symbol of Chippubetsu, “the town where the bell rings”.

Sliding on the Ice - Curling in Moseushi
The next destination on our FAM Trip was the Moseushi Curling Hall. We were here to experience one of the facility’s curling lessons which takes people from beginners all the way up to the level where they can take part in a curling mini-game in just two hours. Given we were almost all total novices with no experience of curling and little experience on the ice, our teacher, Mr. Hashimukai, had a lot of work on his hands,
He was, however, more than up to the task. Beginning with just having us walk up and down the ice to build our confidence, it wasn’t long before he had us sliding curling stones up and down the sheet. Looking back on it now, it was stunning how quickly we went from barely being able to walk on the ice to comfortably sliding off the start and landing curling stones right on mark. The obvious improvement we could all see in our own abilities inspired genuine passion in each of us, and the time began to fly by as we were all intently focused on honing our technique and accuracy.
He was, however, more than up to the task. While we’d all improved dramatically in the short amount of time we spent there, none of us were anywhere near the level where we could consistently land our curling stones where we aiming – it was so easy to overshoot! In order to get a real taste of the strategy and tricks that make curling so engaging, we pushed our curling stones without sliding on the ice, giving us more control over exactly where we were landing them. Mr. Haimukai gave us lots of tips and advice on not just how to land your own stones but also how to inhibit your opponent’s.

After fencing evenly in the mini-game (a win to each side), we dashed off to our next destination. The lesson gave me a much deeper understanding of what makes curling such a great sport. I’ll certainly be watching at the Winter Olympics later this year!

Moseushi Onsen Peperu is also nearby, which can be great for easing up those muscles after an intense curling session. It’s a really fun winter activity that you can enjoy in north Sorachi – why not make it the centerpiece of your day trip to the area?

Our final stop for the day was the Fukagawa Apple Land Otoe. This is a facility that produces Fukagawa Cidre, an alcohol cider that uses 100% locally grown Fukagawa apples (in Japan cider sometimes refers to a non-alcoholic drink, but this is the real deal!). We were shown around the facility and given a peek into how the cider is produced.
The first thing that struck me on entering the juicing area was the incredibly strong smell of apples! You could immediately tell just how fresh all of their ingredients were. We saw the machines used for juicing the applies, the enormous containers where the juice is stored, and the fermentation vessels that turn the juice into alcoholic cider. We also saw as they transferred the finished cider into store-ready bottles. Each individual bottle is held to a light and checked by hand to make sure there is no apple pulp or any other unpleasant surprises, so you can be sure each and every bottle is filled 100% with delicious, Fukagawa Cidre.

The highlight of the facility isn’t the tour, though – it’s the chance to make a cider all your own!

We were also treated to a tasting of several different kinds of Fukagawa Cidre. Cider is an incredibly popular drink in the UK (my home country), so this was a particularly fun opportunity for me. We sampled four different varieties of Fukagawa Cidre: Fukagawa Cidre Sweet, a tangy, carbonated variety popular with my coworkers from China and South Korea; Fukagawa Cidre Light, a stronger and smoother tasting variety that reminded me of Japanese sake and was my personal favorite; Fukagawa Cidre Dry, a crisp and clean variety that pairs well with food; and Fukagawa Cidre Premium, which had the freshest taste of apples and reminded me of cider back home in England.
Hokkaido isn’t all that well known in Europe, but those familiar with it think of its delicious seafood and incredible powder snow. A Day in North Sorachi
After thanking our hosts and saying farewell at Fukagawa Station, we made our way back to Sapporo. I gazed out onto shining white fields of snow that blanketed Sorachi and out to the mountains that formed its borders, taking in the tranquil beauty of the scene before me. The train rides I take through Sorachi are always special to me because of the opportunity they give me for reflection – the carriages themselves are so quiet and the views so peaceful. My mind always wanders to what it would be like to live in each city or town we pass through. I’m fortunate enough to have spent some time living in the subprefecture, but I think anyone travelling here can get a taste of what it’s like in just a day.
While Sapporo, Otaru, Hakodate, and Asahikawa are certainly more famous than Fukagawa and Chippubetsu, I do think Northern Sorachi offers a charm all its own. Northern Sorachi has a wonderful mixture of fun experiences, spectacular sights, and delicious food, all accessible by car (and many by train or bus) within a day from Sapporo or Asahikawa. If you’re looking to get away from the crowds and experience something a little quieter then I can’t recommend anywhere better.
