皆さん、こんにちは！私は北海道庁で働いているイギリスから来た国際交流員、ジョシュア・デヴォイと申します。
1月21日に空知総合振興局主催の「FAMトリップ」に参加し、空知の美唄市、長沼町、栗山町を訪ね、様々なアクティビティを体験しました。
※FAMトリップ：旅行会社やインフルエンサー等を招へいし、管内観光コンテンツを視察いただくことで、旅行商品の造成等を促し、誘客促進を目的とした視察旅行のこと。

実は、札幌市に引っ越す前に空知の岩見沢市に住んでいました。空知が大好きなのですが、観光客がよく訪ねる札幌市と近い地域として日帰り旅行としていいところなのに、なぜ観光客の数が多くないんだろうと思っていました。
空知に住んだことがある私ですが、「FAMトリップ」で体験したものは初めて知ったものばかりでした。観光客、特に欧米から来る観光客のなかで、空知の魅力はあまり知られていないと思うので、今回は空知の魅力を皆さんに伝えたいです。

誰でも楽しめる雪遊び！

当日、日本最大級の広大な雪遊びフィールド、美唄スノーランドへ行きました。札幌から美唄までは電車（特急）で35分ほどかかり、美唄駅からスノーランドまでは無料バスで行けます。
私はパウダースノーやスキー場が有名な北海道に住んでいても、ウインタースポーツが得意ではありませんが、美唄スノーランドではスキーやスノーボードができない方でも北海道の冬を楽しめます。入場チケットは、大人1,000円、子供500円です。
このチケットでスノーチュービングやバブルボール、ファットバイクなどのフリーアトラクションを体験できます。この無料のアクティビティは子供に人気だそうで、子供っぽい私にとって、とても楽しかったです。よりエキサイティングなことをやりたい方に、スノーラフティングや4輪バギーなどの有料アクティビティもあります。練習が必要なスキーみたいなものではないので誰でも安心して楽しめます。

美唄スノーランドからの景色は非常に美しく、山々に囲まれているなだらかな雪原を背景に、写真を撮影する絶好の機会が多くありました。また、大自然の中にあるスノーランドで野生動物を見る可能性もあり、この日私は2匹の野生の狐を見ました。
様々な特徴がある美唄スノーランドでは特に家族、スキーなどが苦手な方がいるグループにとっておすすめです。

地元の北海道を味わう

北海道のグルメは国内外で有名です。北海道ならではのスープカレーやジンギスカンを味わうために遠くから来る観光客も多いそうです。
しかし、北海道の美味しい料理は札幌の観光地に限定されていません。逆に、地方、田舎の店・レストランがより美味しいことはよくあり、美唄市もその１つです。観光客で美唄を訪れる人はスノーランドが目的の人が多いそうで、美唄市のほかの魅力はほぼ味わうことなく帰ってしまうそうです。そこで誘客促進のため、スノーランドチケットを買うと、市内のお店で使える500円割引クーポンがもらえます。このクーポンは自然に囲まれているカフェや伝統的な和食屋、お土産屋さんで使えます。人気がある観光地と比べて安く、クーポンを使うとコスパはすごくいいです。札幌の喧噪からはなれ、広大な空知にある美唄市で北海道の平穏を楽しめます。

スノーランドを後にして、私たちが行ったのは「ふぁみり～れすとらん仙中里(せんちゅりー)」というファミリーレストランです。1987年に創業し、もうすぐ半世紀となるこのレストランの料理は美味しいうえに、量が多く、値段が非常に安いです。もし500円割引クーポンを使ったら、私が食べたヒレカツ定食はコーヒーも付いて750円で食べることができ、現在の換算率で5ドルより安いです。

様々なユニークな体験

岩見沢に住んでいた時、長沼高等学校を訪問しました。そこで、「長沼の有名なところは何ですか」と生徒に聞いたところ、「何もない」と言われて笑った記憶がありますが、「FAMトリップ」で、それは大嘘だと気づきました。
高校生は自分の出身地の特徴に気づいていませんでしたが、長沼町のパンフレットを見ると、長沼は野菜の大生産地であり、フルーツや肉（ジンギスカン）が美味しいところだと分かりました。今回の「FAMトリップ」で驚いたのは、長沼でできる体験の多さです。木の皿作り体験や寄せ木キーホルダー作り、オリジナル書道Tシャツ体験など、たくさんあります。私たちが体験したのは個人的に一番楽しそうな和菓子作り体験です。

和菓子作り体験は森下松風庵で行い、３つの練り切り和菓子を作りました。
中国人国際交流員の于さんは和菓子作りのプロで、于さんによると、これは非常に難しい和菓子だそうです。材料が柔らかいため破れやすく、完成したものを強く押して取り出そうとすると台無しになります。しかし、先生の優しいご指導で、不器用な初心者の私でもなんとか作れました。練り切り和菓子作りはどんどん難しくなり、１つ作り終えてもさらに難しいチャレンジが来て、満足感を感じました。この珍しい体験をとおして、和菓子の新たな魅力を知ることができました。

北海道の生きている歴史

栗山町の町外れには、北海道でも老舗の酒造、小林酒造があります。北海道を代表する美しいレンガ蔵と石蔵で100年以上酒造りを続けています。
小林酒造は明治11年に札幌で開業しましたが、炭鉱で栄えていた夕張市とより近い土地である栗山町に明治33年に移転しました。
なぜ夕張市に近いところだったかというと、仕事を終えた炭鉱夫の楽しみがお酒を飲み交わすことであり、とても需要があったからです。
現在は空知の炭鉱産業はなくなりましたが、小林酒造は今でも北海道中で愛されています。今では、酒造りを行いながら、昔使っていた道具や資料を展示する博物館としても使用されています。英語対応はあまりできないとのことですが、利き酒（試飲）の機会やかっこいい歴史的な光景を見ることができます。

小林酒造で私が特に気に入ったところは美しい建物と美味しいお酒です!北海道では赤レンガの建物が有名で、赤レンガ建築を背景にインスタ映えの写真を撮りたい観光客が多いと思います。札幌、函館、小樽の赤レンガ建築が有名ですが、小林酒造ではよりユニークな写真が撮影できると思います。
観光地より本物の日本を体験したい方も多いと思います。栗山町では、北海道ならではの伝統的な小林酒造が作ったお酒を味わえ、日本で愛されているおしゃれなお酒のお土産も買えます。日本語がわからなくても、小林酒造は魅力があると思います。

素敵な日帰り旅行

今回の「FAMトリップ」で南空知の魅力を知りました。このブログで皆さんも少し味わえたと思いますが、実際に体験してみませんか？空知の魅力を味わうことで、北海道への理解が深まり、忘れられない思い出になると思います。

Hello everyone! My name is Joshua Devoy. I’m from the United Kingdom and I’m currently working as a CIR (Coordinator for International Relations) at the International Affairs Division of the Hokkaido Government. I was invited to join the ‘FAM Trip’ hosted by the Sorachi General Subprefectural Bureau on the 21st January, where we visited Bibai, Naganuma, and Kuriyama in Sorachi and tried my hand at a bunch of different activities.

*FAM Trip: A tour where travel companies, influencers etc. are invited to visit a region’s tourist sites and facilities in order to promote the creation of travel products and promote the region to tourists.

Before I moved to Sapporo, I actually lived in Iwamizawa in Sorachi. I really love the region and always wondered why it wasn’t more popular amongst tourists given it was so close to Sapporo, which gets so many. I think it’s probably because many tourists, especially those from America and Europe, aren’t familiar with all the wonderful things you can do in Sorachi. Even I, who had lived in Sorachi before, was totally unaware of the activities we experienced on the FAM Trip. I’m looking forward to telling you all about it, and giving you a taste of what makes Sorachi so special.

A Winter Playground for Anyone to Enjoy

To start our day, we headed to Bibai Snowland,one of the largest snow playground in all of Japan. It only took us a 35 minute ride on the rapid-express train to get from Sapporo to Bibai, followed by a short, free bus ride that took us directly to Bibai Snowland.

Although I live in Hokkaido, famous for its powder snow and ski resorts, I’m not particularly good at winter sports. Here at Bibai Snowland, though, even people like me that can’t ski or snowboard can enjoy the Hokkaido’s winter. Tickets for adults are 1000 yen, and for children just 500 yen.

With these tickets you can enjoy a variety of free attractions, such as snow tubing, bubble balls, and fatbikes. I’m sure that kids would love these activities; childish as I am, I loved them too! If you’re looking for something a little more exciting, there’s also several charged snow activities, such as snow rafting and 4-wheel drive buggies. All of these activities can be safely enjoyed by anyone, giving everyone the chance for some fun in the snow.

The view from Bibai Snowland is unbelievably beautiful. The mountains rising beyond the snowy valleys make it the perfect photo location. Given its location out in the nature of Hokkaido, you’ve even got a chance of spotting some of the wildlife; I saw two wild foxes while we were there!

With so many things to enjoy, Bibai Snowland is a particular great spot for families with children and groups with people who, like me, aren’t great at skiing or snowboarding.

A Taste of Rural Hokkaido

Hokkaido’s cuisine is famous both inside and outside Japan. Many people travel a long way to have a taste of Hokkaido’s signature soup curry and Jingisukan dishes. However, it’s not just Sapporo’s tourist spots that offer a taste of Hokkaido’s delicious food. In many ways it’s the opposite; many of the prefectures rural towns and local restaurants offer even more delicious food. Bibai is one such town.

Although many tourists travel out to Bibai Snowland, comparatively few spend time enjoying Bibai’s other charms. In order to encourage people to spend a little longer in Bibai, tourists visiting Bibai Snowland can also get a 500 yen coupon with ticket they buy. These coupons can be used at a number of restaurants and stores in and around Bibai, including several traditional Japanese restaurants, a café out in the countryside, and even a souvenir store! The prices here are particularly cheap compared to most popular tourist locations, especially when you count in your 500 yen saving. Why not get away from the hustle and bustle of Sapporo and enjoy some tranquility in Sorachi’s Bibai?

After our visit to Snowland, we went to ‘Family Restaurant Century’ for lunch. Opening in 1987, the restaurant has been serving large portions of delicious food at affordable prices for almost 50 years. The hire-katsu lunch set that I bought costs only 750 yen (less than 5 dollars at the current conversion rate) when you use the coupon; it even comes with a coffee!

A Treasure Trove of Unique Activities

When I lived in Iwamizawa, I visited Naganuma High School. While I was there, I asked the students “What makes Naganuma special?”, only to be told “Absolutely nothing!” It became a funny memory for me, but on this FAM Trip I saw it for what it really was; a big, fat lie!

It’s easy to understand why high school students might not see anything special about their hometown, but one look at the town’s pamphlet will show you the truth. I already knew about Naganuma’s delicious fruits, Jingisukan, and the enormous amount of vegetables it produces. What I didn’t know was all the activities you can do in Naganuma. From handicrafts like wooden plate making or wooden key-holder making to original calligraphy T-shirt designing, I was stunned by how many options there were! On our FAM Trip, we go to try the one I was most excited by – Japanese sweets(Wagashi) making!

The Japanese sweets making experience takes place at the Morishita Shōfūan store in Naganuma, where you make three different Japanese ‘neri-kiri’ sweets. According to my coworker Emma, a CIR from China and professional Japanese sweets maker, the ‘neri-kiri’ sweets we were tasked with making were pretty difficult! The neri-kiri dough is soft so it’s easy to tear. It’s also easy to smudge your work after your done if you hold or press it too hard, ruining it and leaving you no choice but to start again. You aren’t just thrown into the deep end though. Even I, clumsy as I am, managed to create something that looked halfway decent with the help of the teacher. The sweets got more difficult to make as we went along, providing me with a new challenge each time I overcame the previous and leaving me with a real sense of satisfaction on completing them all. I developed a new appreciation for Japanese sweets and Japanese sweets making through this rare experience.

A Living Piece of Hokkaido’s History

On the outskirts of Kuriyama rests the long-established Kobayashi Sake Brewery. Here, in the iconic brick buildings of Hokkaido, they have continued to brew sake for over 100 years.

The Kobayashi Sake Brewery opened in Sapporo in 1878, before moving to Kuriyama in 1900. What brought them to their new location was its proximity to the coal-mining city of Yubari, home to many coal miners who enjoyed sharing a drink of sake after a hard day’s work. Sorachi’s coal mining business has now largely died out, but the Kobayashi Brewery’s sake is still loved all across Hokkaido. Alongside their continued brewing operations, they’ve also opened a museum in one of the building. There they display tools, materials, and more from the brewery’s history. They aren’t able to provide explanations in English, but the sake samples and impressive, historic scenes can be enjoyed by anyone.

It was the beautiful buildings and delicious alcohol that left a particular impression on me! Hokkaido’s red brick buildings are famous, often used as a backdrop in photos destined for Instagram. The red brick buildings in Sapporo, Hakodate, and Otaru are all popular, but if you want a more unique photo opportunity, the red brick buildings of the Kobayashi Sake Brewery are just as beautiful!

There’s also many tourists out there who want a taste of the real Japan. Here in Kuriyama, you can taste sake from a traditional brewery popular amongst the locals, and even buy some as a souvenir to take home with you. Even if you don’t understand Japanese, there’s still something to enjoy at the Kobayashi Sake Brewery.

A Wonderful One-day Trip

We learned a lot about what makes South Sorachi special on the FAM Trip and I hope that I’ve given all of you a taste of it too through this blog.
